His parents separated when he was young, and he was raised by his grandmother, Lady Navajbai Tata.

Ratan Tata completed his early education in Mumbai. Later, he went to the United States for higher studies. He studied architecture and structural engineering at Cornell University and graduated in 1962. He also attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975. Beginning of Career



Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in 1962. Instead of starting at a high position, he began working on the shop floor of Tata Steel. He worked alongside workers and learned the basics of the business. This experience helped him understand the company from the ground level.

In 1991, Ratan Tata became the chairman of the Tata Group, succeeding J. R. D. Tata. At that time, India was going through economic reforms and liberalization. Many companies were facing tough competition from foreign businesses. Ratan Tata took bold steps to modernize the group and make it globally competitive.

Expansion of Tata Group

Under Ratan Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group expanded into many international markets. One of his biggest achievements was the acquisition of the British steel company Corus Group in 2007. This deal made Tata Steel one of the largest steel producers in the world.

In 2008, Tata Motors acquired two famous British automobile brands, Jaguar Land Rover, from Ford. This was considered a bold move because many people doubted whether an Indian company could successfully manage luxury car brands. However, the acquisition proved to be very successful.

Another important milestone was the launch of the Tata Nano in 2008. It was promoted as the world’s cheapest car and aimed to provide affordable transportation to middle-class Indian families. Retirement and Continued Influence

Ratan Tata retired as chairman of the Tata Group in 2012, and Cyrus Mistry succeeded him. However, he continued to serve as chairman emeritus and remained involved in guiding the group.
